A group of employees interested in improving their terms and
conditions of employment approach the Union and ask for assistance.
Gathering of information; name of employer, locations, principal
product or services, number of employees, shift starting times, and
other necessary facts needed to set a winning strategy.
Distribution of authorization for representation cards to employees.
The employer does not see the cards when they are filed with the
Board or during the course of the election proceedings. Cards must be
dated.
After enough employees sign the cards, the union petitions the
National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) to have a certification vote.
The NLRB then verifies the signatures on the cards and orders an
election.
The Election is held, if the majority vote YES for the Teamsters the
Vote is then certified by the NLRB.
A union meeting will be held for the EMPLOYEES to submit proposals and
form a bargaining committee made up of and elected by the employees.
Union representatives demand negotiations with the employer.
Contract Negotiations.
Once the bargaining committee has reached the best possible agreement
with the employer the agreement is brought back to the members for a
ratification vote. If a majority votes yes the contract is signed and
implemented. If the majority votes no the committee goes back into
negotiations with the employer.
REMEMBER THESE FACTS:
THE UNION IS THE EMPLOYEES. THE EMPLOYEES ELECT THE BARGAINING
COMMITTEE. THE COMMITTEE BARGAINS FOR WHAT THE EMPLOYEES WANT. THE
EMPLOYEES VOTE ON ANY CONTRACT AGREEMENT REACHED WITH THE EMPLOYER
BEFORE IT IS IMPLEMENTED.
